6th IPA Press-in Engineering Seminar in Kochi was held at Sanpia Chres, Marine Hall in Kochi City, Japan on Tuesday 9th July 2013. Researchers and Engineers gathered from 12 countries and record-high 232 people’s participation to the Seminar including persons concerned with local governments of Kochi prefecture and Kochi City. Including result of the academic research for the Press-in technology, the surge of application examples of the Press-in technology throughout the Asian countries and the concrete counter measures examples at the administration level of hometown Kochi by utilizing the Press-in method with background of high demands for disaster prevention was introduced. The Seminar was successfully held with fused lecture contents of a theory and practice of Press-in technology.

In the seminar, four lectures by five lecturers were carried out following an opening address by IPA Vice Chairman Prof. Kusakabe and a congratulatory address by the Deputy-Governor of Kochi prefecture Mr. Takafumi Iwaki.

At first, Dr. Stuart Haigh and Mr. Ishihara jointly announced the research results based on the longtime collected studies between Cambridge University and Giken Seisakusho Co., Ltd. with respect to the performance of the Pressed-in piles, efficiency of the Press-in application and the estimate of the pile toe resistance by utilizing PPT (Pile Penetration Test) method as possibilities of the concrete development to be introduced to the Press-in construction site.

There was an introduction by Mr. Nonomura, a deputy director of Kochi Risk Management Department in Kochi Prefecture, in terms of the premeditated action against the possible prolonged flood assumed by coming Nankai Earthquake, from the administration point of view, with consideration of the simulated damage prediction and the prompt restoration measures including a utilization of Press-in method. Dr. Goh Teik Lim, Director of ATSUNEW GIKEN Pte. Ltd., introduced the example that the Press-in application has been specked in as an environmental measures of construction in Singapore where construction pollution and regulation for the environment were sublimed into. Also, the application examples of the Press-in method and the future prospects in other ASEAN countries were introduced as well. (Abridged translation in Japanese by Mr. Ishii, IPA auditor)

Mr. Kimura, Giken Seisakusho Co., Ltd., introduced the examples of new Press-in application in Japan such as the Nino coastal levee improvement in Kochi City of which the implant structure became the first adoption to the country direct control project, the anti-disaster measures applications by the Gyropress Method, the Combination Gyro Method which is well suited for various application and the special Press-in machine to deal with super low altitude head clearance.

Following the seminar, the annual exchange meeting was held among the researchers, the Government administrative persons concerned and the peoples concerned with company as the exchange of courtesies in industry-academic-government with a peaceful atmosphere from beginning to end. On the following day 10th July 2013, “2nd INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP for Young Researchers” for the purpose of upbringing of the young researchers and “1st INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR for Research Works in Asian Countries” as engineers and researchers exchanged opinions for utilizing results of research in practice in the Asian region were held.

It was the prosperous event that the members with high motivation have been increased steadily and it has been progressed by high quality contents, since Honorary Chairman Mr. Kitamura announced “Kochi shall be a place as the Mecca of Press-in technology” in the 2nd IPA Seminar.
